Free Contests May Not Cost You Money, But They Can Still Cost You

Bloged in Better Publishing by Admin Sunday November 30, 2008 at about 12:38 pm

If there’s no entry fee, why not enter? If I don’t win, I don’t lose anything. Many a new writer has been burned by thinking this way. Free competitions may not cost you any money to enter, but they can still cost you.

The Big Beware: Are You Selling Your Rights by Entering?

Beware of competitions that have no entry fee but a statement saying they have the right to print your work, regardless of whether or not you win. In some cases, these competitions also take the copyright to your work. That means your story is no longer yourswhether or not you win.

To avoid getting burned, read the contest guidelines and make sure there is no statement that says anything like “all entries become the property of XXX” or “by entering, entrants grant permission for XXX to publish, edit, or sell the work.”

Is Your Work Automatically Going to be Published?

Be careful of free competitions where entries are automatically published online. If they’re published online, that means you can’t sell them as first rights anywhere else. Selling reprints isn’t easy and you usually can’t sell reprints for much.

For these competitions, your entry can become your only chance to sell the story. In these cases, it’s often better just to try and sell it to a market. At least then, you get more than one chance.

The BIG Prize Money

Some competitions that require publishing rights to all entries have large prizes to attract people. But if a lot of people enter, that means your entry will have to be pretty good to win.

If you can write a story that will be better than 2000 others, it’s quite possible you’d be able to sell it to a magazine for almost as much as the prize money. And that way, there’s no risk to you.

And what if your story is almost good enough to win? You don’t win and you risk a story that you could probably sell somewhere else. It’s not worth the risk for a chance at the big prize.

Who is the Contest Benefiting?

Katrina’s Story: When a “Highly Commended” is Your Loss

“I was really unhappy when a story I wrote got published online for no pay. It was published as one of the “Highly Commended” stories, with two stories published each monthnone for any pay. Looking at the competition now, I think it was their way of getting free content. The first prize winner got paid $200. Another 24 got paid nothing. The ezine got a year’s worth of content for $200. I got nothing for it.” -Katrina, Creative Writer

Very few contests are run only for the benefit of writers. But even if the organizer gets something out of it, it still should be fair to writers. Think about what the organizer is gaining and ask yourself if they’re taking advantage of writers.

The Impact on You

The judging of free competitions isn’t always done so that the prize goes to the best work submitted. Some competitions are judged by people with no expertise in writing, some are judged by one person who simply picks their favorite, and some just pick a winner almost at random.

The problem this can create is that you’re entering competitions, not winning, and so assuming that you’re not that great of a writer. This happened to Angela and it almost made her give up on writing.

“I started entering competitions as a way of testing to see if I had any talent. I entered about 40, didn’t win any, and was about to give up writing. Then an experienced writer encouraged me just to start submitting to magazines. Since then, I have sold over half of the pieces I entered in competitions.” -Angela, Poet & Writer

The lesson is to enter contests, but remember that even if the contest is being judged fairly, there is only one winner. Not winning does not mean that your work is not good, or that your work is not publishable. It just means that your entry wasn’t the absolute best according to the judges of that particular contest.

The Final Call

Competitions do offer a great opportunity and can be a positive part of a writing career. But before you enter, read the terms and consider what you have to lose. If the contest terms are asking too much and giving too little, it’s time to move on and find a better way to get your work out there.

The Power of Your Ego in Writing Online Copy

Bloged in Better Publishing by Admin Sunday November 30, 2008 at about 9:55 am

I obey one main rule when writing copy for the online world: Get
out of my ego and into my reader’s ego. It’s a basic marketing
truth that shouldn’t be violated anywhere. Yet it’s violated
every day online. Let me explain.

One day I received the following email:

Dear Mr. Vitale,
Your name was mentioned on a site that I came upon
while I was looking for informational material to market
on the Internet. Can you PLEASE, give me some feedback
on this. The site is
WWW.Internetpowertools.com/d.cgi?ebookprofits-pw10031
Thank you for you time.

I took a quick peak at his site. If you did, too, you saw that
his site is a sales letter. There is nothing in that headline to
appeal to your ego in a way that is acceptable online.

Off-line that sort of hard-sell headline might work. On-line it
won’t. Why? Because it is too sales oriented. It looks and reads
too much like an ad. If you think of your reader’s ego, you
wouldn’t post something so heavy-handed online. Instead, you
would give them information they want. Information they can use.
Think of it this way: Write your website copy as if you are
writing a how-to booklet or a news release. Give facts. Give
details. Give specifics. I might rather write this fellow’s
website as a special report on the rise of e-books in the new
millennium. I might even give pointers on how to write your own
e-books. In short, get out of your ego and into your visitor’s
ego. Appeal to their interests and they will eventually show
interest in yours.

Let’s look at another example.

Hello Mr. Fire,
I am not a copy writer but I am trying to write a copy
that sells my information product. Can you please check
out my website and tell me whats wrong with the copy I
have now.
www.inetstart.com
Thank you for your time.

Did you take a look at his site? Same problem as the one before
it. It’s written by a person trying to make a sale. That means
the copywriter was writing to his own ego, not to mine or yours.
Again, to transform this or any other website, think of what
your READER wants to see, not what you want to sell. Think about
it. Don’t you care more about what interests you, than what
interests me?

I might rewrite this fellow’s website by writing a news release
or a special report on “The Top 10 New Ways to Make Money
Online.” I’d research the top ways, too, list them, explain
them, and make what he wants to sell just one of the new ways to
make money online. It’s the traditional way to sell anything
with a news release: Simply plug your product or service within
a story of genuine news.

Are there any examples of websites using this basic copywriting
principle? Of course. But they aren’t easy to find. Obvious
examples are www.ebay.com and www.amazon.com. Both focus on YOU.
When you look at ebay or amazon, for example, you don’t detect
an ego behind the sites. Instead, you can easily look around for
what interests YOU. Again, get out of your ego and into your
reader’s ego.

I just took a moment from writing this article to browse some
random sites. I went to www.etour.com and let it bring websites
to me based on what I told it I was interested in. It’s a
marvelous tool. Sites I saw were one on new music releases. No
ego here. This had a search engine for me to type in my favorite
artist or style of music. Another site was on how to give CPR.
Never know when it may be needed. Yet another site taught me how
things operated. Type in anything, like engine or website, and
an article at the site revealed how an engine, or website,
works. Again, all useful information. No ego. No selling.

Which leads to the question: How does anyone make any money
online when they have to create ego-less websites that focus on
the visitor and do little or no selling?

The answer is this: It’s called Hidden Selling. It’s what all
good publicity people or “cause public relations” people do.
They engage you in something you want to know about and sell you
after the fact. It’s the soft sell. It’s what Hallmark Cards
does when they fund a movie. You don’t tune in to watch their
commercials. You tune in to watch the movie they sponsored. As
you do, you are also fed the commercials. Good websites do the
same. They offer you want you want, and sell you quietly, by
focusing on serving you, not selling you.

This whole topic may need more space than what I have here to
fully explain. The bottomline for me is this: You’ll create
better copy on your websites if you focus on your visitor’s ego,
not yours. Think of serving them, not selling them, and
ironically, you will end up selling them.

How To Check the Spelling of Names Used as References in a R

Bloged in Better Publishing by Admin Thursday November 27, 2008 at about 8:45 pm

Whether you are doing a term paper for high school or you are working on your doctoral thesis, you will be creating a list of references (or bibliography) of the resource materials and other published works that you have cited in your paper. Here is an easy tip for avoiding misspelling the names throughout the paper.

Once you have written your paper, and your list of references (bibliography) is done, do the following:

  1. Run spellcheck on ONLY the References/Bibliography section of your paper. To do this, position the cursor on the first reference. Start the spellchecker.

  2. The spellchecker will STOP at every name that isn’t in your computer’s built-in dictionary. It may suggest another spelling, so be sure to proceed cautiously to Step 3.

  3. Check that you have spelled that name correctly, as it appears. That is, refer to your source material and check the spelling as shown in your paper. Correct if/as necessary.

  4. When you are confident that the spelling is correct, click to “Add” that name to your computer’s dictionary (the spellchecker button will either read “Add” or some other word that indicates that you can add or include that word/name in your computer’s dictionary).

  5. Continue to the end of your References/Bibliography section, verifying and/or correcting spelling as necessary. Add all names to your computer’s dictionary as you go.

  6. When the spellcheck of your References section is complete, STOP the spellchecker. That is, once the spellchecker has finished the References section, it will automatically start spellchecking at the beginning of the next section of your text. The first time that it stops after checking the references/bibliography, simply “Close” the spellchecker.

When you run spellcheck on the final version of your paper, the spellchecker will now automatically catch any name misspellings in your paper. For example, let’s say that the author’s name, correctly spelled as in the References/Bibliography section is “Smythe” but you have it spelled “Smyth” in your paper. The spellchecker will stop at “Smyth” and it will suggest that the correct spelling is “Smythe.” You can then make the proper correction to your text.

When the spellchecker stops on a name that it doesn’t recognize, first determine whether it is a name that should be in your references/bibliography. If it should be, and it isn’t, you can add the appropriate entry. If the name doesn’t need to be in your references/bibliography and the spellchecker stops on it, simply verify (from whatever source documents you have) that it is spelled correctly. Once you know that it is spelled correctly, then Add it to your computer’s dictionary. Now if it is used again in your text, your spellchecker will check the spelling for you.

Continue to spellcheck your entire document. If you have supplemental documents (such as tables or appendices) that are separate from your research paper, then be sure to run spellcheck on those files as well. You should always run a final spellcheck after you have made the last correction to your paper. Run spellcheck repeatedly if you continue to revise or update your text.

This tip will help you avoid embarrassing name misspellings in your text.

Lost Soul

Bloged in Better Publishing by Admin Tuesday November 25, 2008 at about 1:48 am

“There are times when the souls of the dead roam around and live like they’re alive. Not knowing their fate, the dead sometimes cannot accept DEATH.”

“Doctor! Doctor! We’re losing her.” The nurse exclaimed.

“Prepare for CPR.” The doctor commanded.

February 22, 2001 at Maxwell Hospital, doctors and nurses were doing their best in saving an innocent being that was striving, fighting for her life.

“Where am I? Ouch! My head.” Lynette mumbled.

“Did I hit my head while I’m sleeping? It’s extremely painful. Ouch! Why am I here? She asked with confusion.

“That’s odd I can’t remember anything about yesterday.”

An ideal daughter and the best friend that’s what Lynette Marshall was, an obedient, lovely and intelligent daughter. The only child of Mr. and Mrs. Marshall.

She stood up and reached for her diary and begun to write…

February 23, 2001

Dear Diary,

Today i woke up with my head extremely painful. Maybe i hit my head while I’m sleeping. But anyway it’s a little bit odd that i cannot remember anything about yesterday. I’m not that old to be forgetful you know. But it bothers mee a lot. I hope can remember it before this day end.

By the way, last night i dreamt of a girl who was rushed in the hospital with blood all over herface. I didn’t see her face that much. She opened her eyes then suddenly it turned black…

Lynette turned the page back to see if what she had written yesterday, February 22 but there was no February 22 written in her diary. She begun to think deep while watching the hands of the clock move but she has no memory of yesterday not even a single detail of what happened.

After dressing up she went to the dining area to have breakfast. Her mother is usually the one who prepare breakfast but today, nothing was prepared. Lynette wondered why. She called her mother but no answer. She went outside the garden to see if she was there but she was not. Then she went to her parent’s room; still she cannot find her, not even a trace of her father.

” Where could have they gone?” Lynette asked herself as she left the house for school.

Lynette’s school is only 100 meters away from home so everyday she walks 100 meters from home to school. She passes through Campbell Street and crosses the highway, which is in front of the school. As she cross, she noticed that were candles lighted in front of the school and the school gate was closed. There were no classes.

“That’s weird, why would they light candles in front of a school? And why is the school closed? Today is February 23, Friday, how can there’s no classes. I don’t remember the school announcing that there will be no classes today. It’s not even a holiday.” Lynette asked with confusion.

As she thinks deeper and deeper, remembering all things happened yesterday her head started to ache again. It was too painful that she knelt because of it. But not noticing it, she knelt beside the lighted candles. Then the pain was gone…there was silence.

She has nowhere to go but to head for home. Expecting that her parents were back, she excitedly called for them.

“Mom! Dad! I’m home.” Lynette shouted happily.

” I went to school but I didn’t know there were no classes today.” She explained.

“Mom? Dad?” She called but still her parents weren’t there.

“Where could have they gone? How could they leave me alone? She asked herself.

She was alone, waiting for her parents to arrive. She decided to go to their neighbor’s house to play with Nanette, her classmate but no one’s their too. She went home disappointed. She sat down on a chair, leaning on the window patiently waiting. She was depressed and cried.

“Why is everyone around me are gone? Why?” she cried all day until she fell asleep.

The phone rang. She woke up. She excitedly stood up and hoping that it was a call from her parents, rushed to where the phone is. But before she can even lift the phone, the answering machine beeped.

” Hi this is Mrs. Marshall speaking. We are the Sunrise Funeral Homes right now. Please leave a message.”

Upon hearing the message, Lynette rushed to the funeral home without any idea why her parents were there. As she reached the funeral home, she noticed that people from their neighborhood were gathered there as well as her teachers and classmates. As she entered the open door of the funeral home, her heart beats faster and faster there she saw her mother crying over the coffin. Wondering who was in there, she approached the coffin. Again there was pain. Her head suddenly ached again. She leaned on the glass. She froze. She can’t believe what she saw. It was her body. She ran.

Now it’s clear for her why her parents were not at home. Now it’s clear why the school was close, the lighted candles… why she can’t remember anything about yesterday.

February 22 at 7:30 am, while Lynette Marshall was crossing the street, a speeding car was insight. She did not notice it because she was in hurry, not wanting to be late for school. The car beeped but it’s too late. Lynette was hit. Blood was dripping from her head. She was rushed in the hospital. The doctors tried to save her but they can’t do anything. She died.

As new day start for the living, her spirit still roam around as if she was still alive. She continued the things she was doing not knowing she was already dead. She was confused as things around her started to become weird and freaky.

All along, as she found out the truth, she thought she was still alive. She doesn’t know what happened. She doesn’t want to accept reality.

How to Start and Sustain a Career as a Freelance Writer

Bloged in Better Publishing by Admin Sunday November 23, 2008 at about 9:15 pm

Have you wondered how you can make a career writing books or articles for various publications? Or are you seeking a viable second income opportunity but do not know where to start? Well, freelance writing may be the right career for you and it can open a world of lucrative opportunities for you.

You do not need to have special qualifications to be a freelance writer and make money. What you need is the ambition, diligence in your craft and willingness to learn the necessary skills. Of course you need to be literate in a popular language especially English in order to communicate with a large readership and sell your work widely.

Getting Started

Getting started as a freelance writer is easy compared to what it takes to enter other careers .You need to assess your skills to enable you to choose what to write about. What knowledge or training do you have? Are there issues or facts you are more familiar with? What are your hobbies/interests? These and other questions if well answered will have set you on the path to being a writer.

However, it may be necessary to learn the art of writing from experts and this is why you should take a writing course. There are many writing courses available and an appropriate search on the Internet will reveal some, which may be suitable for you. While some courses are full-time and may require minimum entry qualifications you may find a host of others which are part-time and do not require any special qualifications.

A good option is to take a distance learning course and you will find several in this category. These give you an opportunity to study at home at your own pace. Notable among them are those offered by two UK based colleges and which are available to prospective writers worldwide. One is offered by the Writers Bureau of Manchester United Kingdom. The college offers a freelance writing distance learning course which leads to the issue of a certificate on completion and gives you an opportunity to earn from writing while you learn.

The other college is the London School of Journalism which offers diplomas and post graduate diplomas in writing. Many areas of writing are covered by both colleges and it is advisable that you enroll in one of these courses to sharpen your talents and take advantage of the opportunities that go with studying them.

In case you do not feel like enrolling in writing courses for any reason then all is not lost. There are vast resources on the internet and elsewhere which you can resort to for learning about writing. You may read various essays on writing on the internet written by experienced writers. There are many of these and it’s only a matter of knowing how and where to find them. There are also books about freelance writing which you may order from book stores or direct from publishers. A visit to your local library may also prove useful in unearthing useful information on writing.

Once you have embarked on writing you need to keep a notebook or journal to record wild ideas as they come to your mind or while reading various publications. To discover ideas for your writing you need to read widely magazines, newspapers, books, watch television and so on. Give the news and features a second thought, study them critically and ask yourself questions about what is contained in them. Imagine what would have been the situation if the events cited had not happened. Since they have happened how can the situation be made better? What are the effects of those events? Think more about them. Dream and take notes.

WRITING YOUR PIECE

Now comes the hard part putting your ideas in black and white. This part may be difficult depending on your circumstances. You could be having so many ideas that you are overwhelmed by the sheer volume of information you have collected. You are stuck with stacks of sheets of information you have jotted down that you do not know where to begin. Alternatively you could be having only a few ideas to fit only one page and do not know where to find information to write the rest of your book or article.

These are dilemmas that face writers at various points in time perhaps they reflect lack of tact in handling theirs work. As a writer you need to do proper planning to avoid any of those two scenarios you need to have researched your market first before even researching the subject.

This brings us to the issue of markets study. You need to study the audience to know what their requirements are. In the case of articles, you should study the writers/submission guidelines and a few issues of the publications to know your markets well. Many publications have writers/submission guidelines on their web pages. Next you need to be familiar with the style guidelines. These are more or less the same as the writers guidelines but may include issues such as spelling, punctuation and other aspects of grammar.

It is important that you read their style guides to avoid you articles being rejected. In case you do not know where to find them then it is advisable to write to the editors for copies. Alternatively you may be find some in libraries and bookstores.

As important as the study of the market is the research on the topic you want to write about. Write down all ideas you have on the topic as they come to mind without editing them. Turn them upside down to come up with fresh ideas. Then decide on the angle and slant of your article.

The above exercise would have generated a lot of material, which may be used as a basis for your story. Then depending on the type of article you are writing you can do extensive research, taking notes as you carry on. The research could be on the internet, which is a good place to start from or in publications found at the library. You may have to buy some books, which are not locally available or pay for photos from media agencies. Alternatively you may use the services of hired researchers or research agencies. A good source of research documents is the British Library, which can for a small fee send you photocopies of requested material anywhere in the world. The US Library of congress has a similar service. You may also search for experts in your local directory who may provide you with useful information. In sum there is limitless scope for research and only you may decide on the limit based on the requirements of the article.

Next, you should organize the ideas and information from the research into a concise and coherent order. This is the planning face where you decide the structure and format of your article, choose what is relevant and would advance the goal and spirit of your article. Select ideas from the research information and not word for word copying. Be careful lest you be accused of plagiarism of other people’s work or infringing on their copyrights. Write several drafts until the complete article has taken the shape and tone you want, check on the spelling, punctuation and other aspects of grammar and style in each draft to achieve a well polished article. It is not a bad idea if you seek a second opinion from your peers before preparing the final draft. There are thousand of writing communities on the internet which may assist you in that regard.

After writing the final draft type it and send it to the responsible editor of the publication.

The Contents

What goes into making a successful article? Well the answers could be varied depending on the scope and nature of the article. I believe there can be no standard way of writing an article. However, we can at least agree on some universal principles of what constitutes a good article.

First, any article must be captivating to its intended readership or audience. Readers must be glued to it and have the thirst to read it on until the end. They will read it twice, thrice and even more or keep it as a souvenir for days and years to come. This is the ideal article and if yours can reach that level then the better.

Your article must offer useful information, which the reader may use to his benefit or at least enlighten him on important issues. If it is a story it will give the reader temporary relief or inspiration on a particular issue. It will make him dream or be filled with imagination, which will give him a sense of relaxation. In brief it will entertain him.

How will you achieve all that? By organizing the article in a logical and structured order. You will use words to convey ideas precisely; you will say what you mean and mean what you say. Choose the right words to convey the intended message. You swear not to use incomprehensible metaphors and jargon and if you do then you are certain that they are at the level that your audience is readily familiar with. Use the right similes and aphorisms. Be concise in your use of language, make the sentences and paragraphs flow smoothly with similar ideas aptly grouped and flowing in a logical and pleasant order. Paragraphs are short and measured.

All that is not easy to achieve with the stroke of a pen and you will have to do much learning and imagination to attain that level. Hopefully there is an easy path to that objective. This is through constant reading especially of fiction books since they are a great resource of imaginative ideas and are models of language use.

Read them regularly and take a few notes down. Do not stop with fiction books but do also read magazines, newspapers and other non-fiction works. See what other successful writers have done and follows the principles behind their writing success.

Let’s now look at the how part of writing. An article contains three main parts that is introduction, the body and the conclusion. The introduction may be said to be the most important part of the article. This is not to underrate the other two parts or to say that we can have an article without the other parts.

We wish rather to show its significance in interesting your readers to want to read the article. This is exemplified with the first opening paragraph popularly known as the leader or lead paragraph. It is a strong paragraph which aptly summarized the theme of the article. It will mostly likely be one sentence but no harm if it is split into two or three sentences.

The body of the article follows next after the introduction and is divided into many paragraphs depending on the length of the article. The main theme of the article is developed here. Arguments and counter-arguments are made. Facts are spilled. Comments are made. Analysis is done. Without the body you have no successful article or no article at all. Your credibility as a writer will be judged on how you successfully handled the writing of the body. You readers will have no regrets of having gone past the introduction and entering the body. If they find it satisfactorily written, suspense overcomes them until they reach the conclusion.

To conclude the article, the writer ingeniously in a few sentences summarizes the theme of the article. He does not recapitulate the facts cited in the body but gives the reader the sequel of the story. It all requires creativity to write a good conclusion that leaves the readers with good memories of your article. The conclusion does not leave questions lingering the minds of your readers but gives a final word on the theme. In matters which are full of uncertainty the writer speculates on the most likely outcome.

Marketing Your Work

Here comes the most important part. You have taken days or weeks collecting information, gathering ideas, writing and polishing your article and it is high time you gained from your sweat.

There are several approaches to selling your article. Each has its own advantages but most experts are unanimous that querying is the better option. This is simply because it is inexpensive and you get value for what you work for even if after a long time. It is hassle-free and while not without its disappointments, it is relatively less painful if you receive a rejection.

Querying is the first thing you should do after you have formed a strong idea on the theme of your article. Check publications directories and on the internet for addresses of editors responsible for accepting freelance writers’ work and then write to them addressing them by their names and titles.

A query is a one page or so letter to a named editor of a publication asking for an opportunity to contribute an article for publication. It contains a brief summary of the main theme of the article, it’s suggested length, when you are likely to deliver it if you are commissioned to write it, the likely benefits the readers will derive from the article and why you are the right person to write the article.

You should put a lot of imagination in writing the query letter as this is your best opportunity to convince the editor of your ability to deliver on your promises. If you have a good resume attach it or mention briefly relevant contents which makes you stand out as the most suitable to write the article. Editors prefer experienced writers to novices and if you have what it takes then say so. Otherwise if you are a beginner avoid saying so but include a few samples tailored to the publications readers taste. If you will use special or exclusive sources of information then don’t forget to mention that in your query.

How many times should one query per article? As many times as is practicable, just so long as you are able to deliver on your promises taking into consideration time constraints. In fact for your writing business to be viable you need to send many queries to ensure that your potential earnings will be able to sustain you in your career. However you should be wary of a situation where you receive several acceptances on the same theme and you send exact replicas of the article. Try to give a different spin and change the wording to suit different publications. Take work according to your ability and capacity.

The other alternative to marketing your work is to write articles for mass audiences imagining their needs and tastes and submitting to various publications. You target several publications in one category which you feel will be most suitable to accept the theme of your article. You may also copy your article from your disk or computer and paste on virtual publishing communities websites or email your article to various editors. This is a quick and cheap way of making multiple submissions of your articles.

We have mentioned virtual publishing communities websites and I feel we should explain briefly what they are. These are websites which accept articles or work form writers and sell to various publications and pay you a modest fee. They are a good starting point for the beginner as they provide quick results of seeing your work published. To be frank it is difficult to win writing assignments without some writing experience or proof that you are a published writer. Such websites give you an easy way of proving yourself and also earning something from your work.

However, these type of websites may have their own pitfalls such as going out of business before you get paid or profiting from your work and giving you little in return. A consoling fact is that you still retain your copyright and you can sell your articles to other publications. Please regard these websites as sources of additional income and not the ultimate markets for your writing work.

How do you know which publications accept work from freelance writers or even the names and addresses of magazines and newspapers editors? There are several ways to do that and we shall mention a few here. A good reference for finding freelance writing markets is the annual Writers Markets. This contains names and addresses publications which accept freelance work. You may order it from Amazon.com or you can check if there is a copy at your local library. On the web, you can use search engines such as Google.com to search for markets by using keywords such as “newspapers and magazines”. You will be surprised by the sheer volume of links that are available which you can browse slowly to look for the categories you want. You will find thousands of publications whether classified by country, subject or readership.

Dealing With Rejections

While doing your marketing you will experience some difficulties such as some publications which have gone out of circulation or editors who do not respond but more often you will receive many polite rejections. Some editors may give you suggestions they wish you to consider before accepting your proposal.

All in all we have to accept that rejections are a fact of life and we will have to live with them but you will be a lot wiser if you study the reasons for your rejections to enable you improve your future queries and submissions thus increasing your chances of getting acceptances. While some editors may not be interested in the theme you are proposing others would have been dissatisfied with your level of experience to handle the articles you are proposing to write. It could also be that the publication has received a similar query from another writer or has plans to write a similar piece using their staff writers. Probably they have published an article on the same theme recently and they feel they have exhaustively covered the subject and unless you have something new or refreshing they are not accepting any proposals for now.

Read what they write to you and learn from their reasons. Do not be discouraged but send more queries to other publications. Choose popular themes for articles and add more value in them such as statistics, photographs, expert comments and an objective assessment of the issues. With time and patience you will ultimately succeed.

Organizing Yourself

As you carry on with your writing you need to organize yourself to successfully take advantage of opportunities as they come along and to ensure that you do not fail to beat deadlines. There are basic necessities such as stationery including files for clippings manuscripts and photographs. You need to keep track of your articles to know where they were published, when and follow up payments. You may need to draw up contracts, type up your articles, post or email them.

Prepare and follow a work plan to enable you succeed in researching and writing articles. Deal with one assignment first before you go to the next. Dedicate as much time as possible to writing since this is the core function of your career. If you write less then the less you will earn and the less motivated you will be to continue with writing.

You also need to spend much time querying on multiple article ideas. This is important since you will be looking for future sales. Though specializing on one genre is good, you should occasionally look for other branches of writing and markets to maximize your chances of making sales.

Manage your financial affairs well so that you do not cripple your career, budget your income and invest in books and other publications o keep your ideas train moving on and on. Don’t forget to invest in savings and other lucrative opportunities for the occasional rainy day.

Once you have a stable income you may open a small office and employ staff to assist you in research, typing and other important tasks. This will enable you churn out more articles every month than if you handle everything yourself. Keep expenses to a minimum and go for high paying markets.

You can build a career out of writing and earn yourself extra income part-time or regular income full time from freelance writing. However you need to study the art of writing, organize yourself and constantly search for markets to stay afloat.

Don’t fear to take the plunge, the time is now!

Have You Tested Your Theme Against Your Plot?

Bloged in Better Publishing by Admin Sunday November 23, 2008 at about 12:28 am

Creative Writing Tips -

How we usually begin the preparation stage in the writing process is…

  • We think of an idea for a story
  • We think of a suitable theme
  • We plot

Once we come up with a theme and we begin plotting, we have to see how the theme and the plot match up. Sometimes as we plot we find that the theme we had initially chosen won’t do.

For example…

‘Winning The Lottery Makes Your Life Easier’

Plotting with this theme in mind, we have our characters pay off all their debts, go on endless shopping sprees, go on holidays, etc. We find though that this won’t make a very interesting story. So we spice it up, adding to the theme or coming up with a different one.

“Winning The Lottery Makes Your Life Easier But Everything Has Its Price.”

We can show the characters living the life of the rich for a while before they realize that being wealthy has its problems too…

  • They now fear for their safety
  • Their friends and relatives are constantly harping at their door asking for assistance
  • Etc

This second scenario creates more problems for the characters, so it’s more interesting for us readers.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
The preparation stage is there to prepare before you write. It’s our workbench where we figure everything out. We test our theme, we test our plot and once everything passes the test, then we begin writing.
You can change the theme as many times as you feel it needs changing, while you are in the preparation stage.
The main thing is to make your story interesting.
It’s not a good idea to keep changing the theme when writing the story because then you will have to keep changing the story. This means rewriting.
Figure everything out then write.
Have you tested your theme against your plot?
Overcoming Writers Block
Bloged in Better Publishing by Admin Saturday November 22, 2008 at about 2:23 pm
Ah, I remember writers block. I used to suffer from it a long time ago. Today I write dozens of articles a week, perhaps five hundred a year. Earlier in my life, I would go months and months without writing a word. Why? Writers block. But I suffer no longer.
The Causes
What causes writers block? In my case, I’ve found a few causes.
The idiots of the world – Occasionally I’ll write something and get a negative comment. In the past when I was in my twenties (seems like a different lifetime now) this would stop me cold. I’d get a comment like “this isn’t that great” or “you should change your article thusly…” and bam, I would stop writing for weeks or months.
Some other failure in life – I’ve found that when I was failing somewhere else in life I would stop writing. You know, hard times at work, lost love, that kind of thing. When life seemed to hit me particularly hard, I would find that I didn’t feel like writing at all.
Something I didn’t understand – Sometimes I would want to write an article but I would find myself stopped cold. Later, I would often discover that I didn’t understand something, some critical piece of information. Once I filled in that gap, I started writing again.
Illness – Something about throwing up just makes it difficult to write …
Too much introversion – I’ve found that I have to extrovert occasionally in order to be able to introvert enough to write. Does that make sense? On those occasions where I could not get out, my writing suffered.
Not writing something of interest – Occasionally, I’ve found I am attempting to write an article about a subject which is of no interest at all. It makes it really difficult to write something when you don’t care a hoot for it.
The Solutions
What are the solutions?
Write something every single day – I have taken a few writing classes, and one common denominator (and perhaps the only meaningful information from any of them) was so simple as to defy imagination. Simply write something every single day.
I write one article, completely polished and ready for publication, every single day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Sometimes I write two or three articles in a day.
It really doesn’t matter what I write, although I usually write about the internet or computers. But occasionally I write other things, including pages for my autobiography or even a love letter to the wife.
Put aside time to write – I have set aside “writing time”, two hours every single night, in which I isolate myself in my office at home and write my heart out. My wife respects my introversion during this time as it allows me to do one of the things that I love the most: communicate ideas in written form.
Fill in any missing blanks – If I find that I am having trouble explaining something in writing or the words just don’t flow, I look around and see if there is something about it that I do not fully understand. That often works.
Ignore the idiots of the world – There sure seem to be a lot of jerks sometimes. However, I don’t need to allow some babbling idiots ruin my writing. Just because someone does not like something does not mean anything except they didn’t like it…
I do not ask for criticism – I never ask anyone to criticize my works, ever. I do not ask for site reviews of my websites, I don’t submit my works for review. Why not? I am not interested in other people’s silly opinions about my works. I know I am a good writer, a excellent webmaster and a great manager. I don’t need anyone to tell me how good I am, and I certainly don’t need anyone to point out my faults.
Changing styles – If I have trouble starting a piece and I’m sure I understand what I’m writing about, I often change the style. I usually write in a very conversational tone, which seems to communicate well to people. However, I will occasionally change to humorous or very serious or whatever. I’ve found these changes tend to blow away writers block like dynamite.
Conclusions
No matter what the cause, writer’s block is something that can be handled and overcome. It’s actually not complicated at all. In fact, the best way to deal with the syndrome is the simplest – just start writing and keep writing, no matter what happens. Write your heart out and before long you will be writing like crazy.
Tips On Writing A Killer Sales Letter
Bloged in Better Publishing by Admin Friday November 21, 2008 at about 7:39 pm
Writing a sales letter doesn’t have to be that difficult all you need is the right writing style and some tips to knock out a killer sales letter
Benefits The first thing you need to do is focus on the benefits the reader will find useful. Tell the reader what’s in it for him. Promise them increased sales, better skin, better results in writing a resume or whatever it is that you’re selling. Tell them how your product can help them. Don’t beat around the bush and get right to the point. Stick to benefits, facts and features. Whatever you do don’t be vague it will turn them off.
Give additional benefits. Show additional value other than main benefit. Give product/service features. Support benefit promises with product/service facts. Show how your company will help him. Don’t start sounding arrogant and brag.
Writing Style: An emphasis should be placed on “you” and not “I”. Use words like you and your, so that the reader feels you are writing for him. Write clearly. Make sure your reader doesn’t have to think about what you’re saying. Your main points must be understood immediately. Make yourself believable. Make sure your claims or representations appear to be realistic and believable. Don’t promise a 200% increase in sales because most people won’t believe it even if it’s true! You must be able to back up your claims. Use repetition; repeat benefits throughout letter. Present the same ideas and benefits in different ways.
Ask for action. Ask the reader to place an order, return the sales envelope or the sales card or phone for more information. Give reasons to act now. For example: Make your offer time sensitive a limited supply, two-week sale, and special purchase. Most sales letters fail to do this.
Understand that people are emotionally motivated. They want to:
  1. Make more money
  2. Save money
  3. Do a good job
  4. Experience love
  5. Have a satisfying home life
  6. Get something for free
  7. Look good
Use simple graphics to get the reader’s attention:
  1. Bullets
  2. Dashes
  3. Check boxes
  4. Numbers
  5. Asterisks
Some Things To Remember When Writing Your Sales Letter:
Put yourself in the reader’s place. Note your reactions while reading the letter. Have your friends and associates give you their honest opinions. Don’t tell them you wrote it! For some reason they think it’s bad manners to criticize their friends. Look at their reactions if they roll their eyes then you need to rewrite your sales letter. If they ask you, “Where can I find this?” You got yourself a winner! Listen to any and all comments. Re-write any parts that turn others off.
Be logical when you state your argument. Don’t try to fool them with outrageous claims that border on the fantastic. Your readers are too smart to fall for such trash.
When you begin writing your sales letter try to accentuate important statements using:
  1. Underlines
  2. Exclamation points
  3. All capital letters (Careful here don’t over do it)
  4. Highlight with a second color (Yellow)
The very last thing that should appear on your sales letter is the P.S. Remind your customers of the time deadline and the limited supply of bonuses. Urge them to pick up the phone and call or order immediately. Your P.S. is often read first by customers. So entice them to read the letter by mentioning the free bonuses and the limited time offer. Remember to put a P.S. (post script) on all sales letters.
Free Weights Vs. Exercise Machines
Bloged in Templates Stuff by Admin Friday November 21, 2008 at about 1:04 pm
Anyone who has ever been in a gym before is familiar with the gleaming banks of shiny exercise machines. Coming in all shapes and sizes, they are usually cause for the newcomer to the gym to pause and ask, “What IS all of that stuff?”
Well, according to the price that the gym paid for any one piece of that equipment, I certainly hope that it not only stimulates your muscles, but also cooks your breakfast, washes your car, and brings the kids home from soccer practice! Now the question becomes whether or not those machines were worth the price, or if you’d be better off doing a home aerobics video with a can of soup in each hand….
Personally, I would advise you to get the low-sodium version of the soup, serve it up alongside a tomato sandwich, and then go buy yourself some free weights. Yes, that is just my opinion, but it does come with some scientific reasoning behind it.
Natural movement vs. Controlled movement
One of the things that you need to remember is that when you are exercising, you are training for LIFE. You may spend an hour a day at the gym, but that still leaves 23 other hours for your muscles to function without the aid of that fancy equipment.
Whenever you do any given exercise, the movement of your body during that exercise is called the Range of Motion. The greater and more difficult the Range of Motion, the more effective the exercise is, because your body has to work harder to perform that movement.
Let’s take a classic dumbbell bicep curl for our case study. If you aren’t familiar with the movement, it is basically performed by standing up straight with your palms facing forward, and a pair of dumbbells held down at your sides. You concentrically contract your biceps (also known as flexing your elbow) to bring the dumbbells up to approximately shoulder level, and then repeat the movement for a prescribed number of repetitions.
Let’s take that same muscle movement and do it using a bicep curl machine. You sit down, brace your upper arms on a pad, grasp 2 handles that are in front of you, and do that same fancy elbow flexing movement to move the handles in an upward motion. Pretty easy stuff so far, right?
Now let’s examine the muscles that are used in this motion. Wait – I thought we were concentrically contracting the biceps? That is correct, and if you are using the bicep curl machine, that is pretty much ALL you are doing. For one, you are sitting down. You know, like you did all day at work, and then in your car on the way to the gym. Then, your upper arms are braced on a nice soft pad to keep your upper body stable while you pull the handles upwards. The machine has effectively limited the muscles used in this exercise to the biceps, as well as the muscles in your forearms and fingers as you grip the handles.
Let us now sidestep over to the weight room where the dumbbells are kept, and once again get in the start position for a standing bicep curl with the dumbbells. Notice the term “standing”. You know, like you DIDN’T do all day at work, and hopefully also did not do in your car on the way to the gym. So before we even start the exercise, we are using more muscles than we did on the machine – namely the leg muscles.
Now let’s pick up a 10 lb dumbbell in each hand. We’ve just added 20 lbs to our body weight. What is keeping us from losing our center of balance and falling clean over? The abdominal muscles and the muscles of the lower back and spine. Now we are using our legs, our abs, and our back. Flex those elbows and start to raise the dumbbells. Now our center of gravity has become a fluid state, and our legs, back, and abs all have to constantly compensate to maintain posture. Oh, and the biceps are also in on the action by this point, as are the forearms, the fingers, and the shoulder girdle.
We now have the dumbbells all the way up and it’s time to start lowering them again, via an eccentric contraction of the biceps (also know as extending the elbow). What muscle group controls the extension of the elbow? The triceps on the back of the arm.
Did you lose track yet? It’s okay if you did because you have illustrated the point:
Machine Bicep Curl: Uses the biceps, forearms, and fingers
Cost: Thousands of dollars
Standing Dumbbell Bicep Curl: Uses the biceps, forearms, fingers, legs, abs, back, triceps, and shoulders.
Cost: $40 for a good set of dumbbells that can be used for dozens of other exercises
In a nutshell, free weight exercises simply USE MORE MUSCLES than machines do, which make them more effective. Does that mean that the machines are a complete waste? Absolutely not! In some circumstances it is BETTER to stabilize the muscles being used in any given movement. However, those circumstances are the exception, rather than the rule.
So what do you do? Change up your routine, and incorporate free weights as well as machine exercises. However, keep the machine work to a minimum – say 20% of your total time spent working with weights. Spend the other 80% developing your stabilizer muscles, your sense of balance and coordination, and if nothing else – just standing up!
After all, you can go home and sit down on the couch to enjoy your post-workout snack. The bicep machine already brought the kids home from soccer practice, remember?
