On Focus

Bloged in Funny Farm, Games, World Of Gambling by Admin Monday February 22, 2010 at about 11:08 am

Aside from the obvious focus that you need to maintain on the poker tablethe awareness of other players, their images, and the cardsthere are other tactics that one can use to help improve one’s focus prior to the cards ever hitting the table. There is an old saying “A hungry dog hunts best.” Now take a minute to think about this. After you’ve just consumed a meal, your body wants to rest, it had no need to “hunt” anymore, and as a result, your mental focus isn’t as sharp as it would be otherwise. There have been several poker players who will fast right before a big tournament, after all, they’re hunting the money, and being hungry for it makes their game that much more fierce. Other avenues a player can take before hitting the table are the paths of Yoga and meditation. In certain forms of Yoga, you learn to focus your mind on certain parts of your body. This kind of training, enhances your focus overall and moreover enhances your ability to “close the lens” so to speak. I call it pinpoint focus, where you zone out everything but that one thing that is sticking out as not quite right. Finally on meditation. This is a tradition in Zen Buddhism, but you don’t have to be a Buddhist to benefit from some healthy meditation. During meditation periods, you usually have visualization periods followed by periods of clearing your mind. You also learn to control your breathing, and to some extent your heart rate. If you can take just some of the benefits from these external focus enhancing activities and apply it on the felt, then you’ll be light years ahead of your poker online opponents who haven’t.

Jeff Shulman’s Simulation Practice

Bloged in Funny Farm, Games, World Of Gambling by Admin Thursday January 14, 2010 at about 11:19 am

During the final table 2009 World Series of Poker final table broadcast by ESPN, they did a nice segment on the preparations undergone by CardPlayer Magazine’s Jeff Shulman in getting ready for the poker online event. Shulman hired the notorious Phil Hellmuth to coach and guide him through the logic required in his proceeding, not only just giving simple advice, but creating an innovative and interesting method for approaching tournament strategy. To do this, Hellmuth set up a mock final poker online table, with live players to act as the players remaining. He created player profiles for each avatar, and had those players stick by the rules of that idea. The 9 players then played table after table of tournament cards to test various strategies and situations as the game itself played out, with Hellmuth giving Shulman instructions and encouragement for each decision as they went along. Though Shulman didn’t win, he did make a fantastic showing, and got his money in with the best poker hand. His process of study in this way seems a smart way for future players with a specific goal to practice methodology over pure cards, and working on the idea of incorporating personality and pattern recognition into the fabric of the game itself.

Tight or Loose

I like to play tight online poker, but my natural inclination lies closer to loose, aggressive poker play. I generally stick to my tight, aggressive game plan, but every now and then I’ll find myself slipping into a much looser style, and after playing both styles of poker, I’ve seen how effective both of them are. In tournaments, it usually pays to loosen up your game as the tournament progresses and the blinds go up in value. Often, the blinds will become so prohibitive that you can’t make it into the money without stealing a few blinds here and there. I’ve noticed that when I start out playing tight and I make a show if it, my opponents are more prone to folding when I try to steal the blinds later on. On the other hand, when I start out a tournament by playing loosely, my opponents will notice that as well, and my bluffs tend to get called later on. If you establish a precedent of loose play by playing sub-par hands and trying to buy up the blinds early on in the game, your later bluff be much less effective. Start out playing tightly in a tournament, your opponents will learn to fear you when you push chips into the pot.

Pay out Structure at Sit and Goes

Bloged in Funny Farm, Games, World Of Gambling by Admin Friday November 20, 2009 at about 10:38 am

Sit and go tournaments are the new kids on the block as far as poker tournaments are concerned. Many people are not aware of the unique characteristics of this kind of tournament. Of course, ignorance of the set up can result in a nasty shock when it approaches the end of the tournament and you are left out of the pot money. The pay outs are the most contentious issue of a sit and go tournament because only the top three players walk away with anything. If you are not a strong enough poker online player to make those top three spots, you are out of luck.

Most standard sit and go online poker tournaments follow the same rules for allocating the pot money to the players. The player who finishes in first place gets half the prize pot, no matter how large it is. The second place player walks away with a solid 30% of the pot, while the third place player earns 20%.

The reason that this is so problematic for most players is that a standard tournament pays out to a significantly larger number of players. Each player in the upper tiers gets less, but they at least get something. This same standard does not hold true for sit and go tournaments.

Satellite Poker Tournaments

Online poker sites offer great ways to exponentially increase your bankroll with little initial investment required. The best example of this is their offering of satellite tournaments, which allow you to win the buy in to a larger tournament by investing only a smaller percentage of the actual buy in. This essentially allows you to play in a tournament that your opponents may have paid many times more for than you did, which allows you to play more comfortably than you otherwise would at that buy in level. Also, there is an obvious financial advantage of a potentially much larger return on your investment.

The most famous example in recent times of a satellite tournament winner is Chris Moneymaker, who won a 40 dollar satellite into the 2003 World Series of Poker, and then won the poker tournament for 2.5 million dollars. Playing a large 10 thousand dollar buy in tournament after investing only a small fraction of the true buy in basically put Moneymaker on a free roll. He could make plays with essentially no risk, and although he certainly felt the pressure, when he was heads up with Sammy Farha he did state that “I got in on a 40 dollar satellite, anything after this is just profit.” Runner up in the 2005 World Series Steve Dannenmann had a similar story after satelliting into the World Series from his home game. The resounding message pertaining to satellites is they are a great way to take a shot at a large payout with little initial investment.

Online poker sites offer satellites into live events, and also into larger online tournaments. You can often use player points to buy into satellites, or just a few dollars. From there, if you defeat your satellite field, you have a shot in the real tournament and essentially free roll for a large payout. Satellites are a very real way to make a large amount of money in a short period of time with a small initial investment.

Poker Player Profiles: Antonio Esfandiari

Bloged in Funny Farm, Games, World Of Gambling by Admin Tuesday December 30, 2008 at about 10:51 am

Antonio Esfandiari first came to poker renown when he showed up on an early season of the World Poker tour as a very young and new player. Known as ‘The Magician’ for his literally having worked in magic for years, Antonio’s WPT performance had some level of magic to it in that at least for the first half of the final table he seemed to have the touch: he boggled Phil Hellmuth to the point of exasperation (back in the days before Hellmuth became intolerable) and ran over chips by will alone.

I have to admit, in the early days of his showiness and semi-cocky style, I couldn’t really stand the guy, but in further time Antonio had revealed himself as a more mature, sturdy poker player in the game.

Capable of making moves in the right spots and tricking players into trying to make moves against him when he has the nuts, Antonio has an arsenal of tricks up his sleeve (pun intended) that might throw even season players off. He seems on the verge of super tight and wild throw offs at all times, while often appearing in the middle with a really solid and straight forward style. This kind of variance, though, is what earns him the respect and tendency to not quite ever be sure where the Magician is at, which is one of the greatest features a poker player can have.

Getting Raised

Bloged in Funny Farm, Games, World Of Gambling by Admin Monday November 10, 2008 at about 3:34 pm

When you play online poker, getting raised is a tension builder. Nothing gets you to stop and pause like when someone challenges you to put more of your chips at risk. When you’re raised, there are always a series of questions that you must consider when deciding whether or not your hand is worth the risk.

-How good is my hand? The first thing that you should do is evaluate the cards in your hand. Are they worth playing? How many outs are there on the table? Figure out how your online poker hand can make money before you put anymore in.

-Who else is in the pot with me? If there’s are several players that have called already, then the odds are that someone’s holding something decent. Also, if it’s a re-raise, that player is likely to have something worth folding to.

-How many pokerplayers are left to act? Be careful if there are several more players behind you-you don’t want to make a tough call only to have someone else re-raise behind you and force you to decdie whether or not to put more chips in.

-Is the prize worth it? Is the pot worth the risk? If you’re fighting for blinds, it may not be worth risking your stack unless you’ve got a strong hand.

-Where do I stand in the game? What’s your stack look like? Can you afford to risk a few chips? If you’re the small stack, it might not be worth it to see what the other guy’s holding. Also if you’re on the bubble, it might be a good idea to play it safe.

What Poker Hands to Play

Bloged in Funny Farm, Games, World Of Gambling by Admin Friday August 22, 2008 at about 2:37 pm

At its heart, the game of poker is about odds. Because of this there is a definitive way to approach each hand in a poker game to give you the best chance of winning. While there are options such as bluffing that can change the game a bit, if you rest your chances firmly on odds then you should win more than you loose. However it takes knowing what hands to keep in order to really be successful.

With the exception of a few unique styles of poker, almost all poker games involve one or more draws where each player has a chance to improve their hand. Because of this it is important to know what hands are worth continuing with and which are not. For the most part the following is true in any poker game where there is at least one draw.

In your opening hand, if you have a pair or better, then it is worth keeping. Also if you have three cards that are suited or in numerical sequence (for example a 3, 4, and 5), then this is a strong hand to start with as well. If you have a hand that has a skipped numerical sequence such as a 3, 5, and 6, you might have something but more often than not you are better off dumping. With the next draw if you hand improves at all stay with it, if it does not and you are not at least holding three of a kind than dump the hand. The previous is true for each draw, if you improve stay in the game, if you don’t fold.
