How to Repair Windows on Old PC and Making it Faster

Bloged in Infos, Software Stuff by Admin Friday December 11, 2009 at about 9:16 am

If your laptop gets slow, you will be waiting longer and longer for it to complete it’s tasks.

Is your Registry an unorganized collection of entreis? Then your slow XP has arrived

One of the most important files on a Windows PC is the Windows registry. A log of different information about your notebook resides here. E.g. where are your programs installed? Where are the DLL files placed? What application does each short cut in your start menu and your desktop point to?

Everything you do while using Windows ends up in the Windows Registry. That could be the location of the latest files used (documents, spread sheets, images, videos etc.). You will also find data about the applications installed and uninstalled.

There are plenty of explanations why a PC gets slower as it gets older.

A professional tool can make your computer fast again.

These 3 steps are typically followed by a profressional tool:

  • The tool scans you PC and detects the errors on you Windows operating system (e.g. Windows XP, Vista and 7).
  • Reparing the errors
  • Eventually your computer is faster, it will also boot faster because it no loger has any registry errors.

More thinks that can make your computer slow

Sometimes it is not your Windows Registry that you can blame for your slow laptop.

Sometimes anti-virus programs causes your PC to be slow due to bad configuration

Your anti virus might be set up to scan harmless files, thus it is using valuable CPU time for no reason.

Add to that your anti virus software may be set to scan both your local harddrives and all network drives.

Regular scans of your network drives takes a lot of your CPU time, the reason is that network drives are much slower than local harddrives

Normally there is hardly no risk involved in disabling network scanning in your anti-virus software

E-Commerce Server and SaaS Monitoring Made Simpler

Bloged in Geeky Stuff, Software Stuff, Technology Resources by Admin Wednesday September 9, 2009 at about 3:41 am

Online Tech announces improvements application and server monitoring to allow for increased uptime for E-commerce and SaaS hosting.
Most of the user frustrations related to E-commerce applications and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) are not attributed to infrastructure failures like internet connectivity or power. They are actually caused by problems in application and server performance. Such issues can be proactively monitored and easily addressed before they can even affect user experience.

In order to address this concern, managed data center operator Online Tech introduces the OTMonitor. This is a multi-probe monitoring solution that is used for dedicated servers and collocation servers. The said service is going to be available in all of the company’s data centers.

There are three categories of elements that the OTMonitor will look into:

• Peformance monitoring – the service will oversee to the server performance characteristics such as CPU and memory use and disk capacity.
• End user monitoring – this covers performance and availability of websites and applications on the Internet.
• Internal system monitoring – this part of the service will cover ports, database performance concerns and application services. the OTMonitor can log through any WMI or SNMP interface.

Our clients for web hosting, e-commerce and SaaS all require the ability to oversee to the performance of any server, application and database and address issues real-time, explains Online Tech president Mike Klein. The OTMonitor is designed to extend the company’s proactive server management.

OTMonitor will send a message to the responder’s contact information as soon as it finds a performance benchmark or outage that is out of its range. Escalations will continue to other responders which include Online Tech engineers until the issue is resolved. The concerns will also be logged and graphed so the information can be used to analyze historical trending and calculate service levels.

Taking Advantage of Open Source PHP MySQL Applications

Bloged in Software Stuff by Admin Monday March 30, 2009 at about 11:23 pm

One obvious solution is to approach a software development company and obtain a custom built product. However to take this approach one needs to first know what features and functionality is desired. Then on the other hand in some instances the need does not warrant the cost of commissioning a custom application.

A plethora of free open source web applications exist today. Regardless of the specific circumstances of the need these applications can quite often prove to be a valuable resource.

http://freshmeat.net is one of the best online directories of open source applications. A quick search on freshmeat.net for say “intranet”, “cms” or “groupware” will yield pages of results. Browsing these results any application marked beta, stable or mature is a possible solution. A large majority of the available web applications would also state PHP + MySQL as the platform.

Oh well I need to have some Linux Server and it’s way too hard is a common reaction. Fortunately this is not entirely true. If you wanted to host a large scale production site then the chances are that a custom Linux server may well be a requirement. However just evaluating on your own PC, or setting up a solution on your LAN for anywhere between 1 to 100 users can be easily realized without custom Linux servers.

The solution is in another open source free product known as WAMP server. The acronym stands for Windows Apache MySQL PHP server. WAMP is extremely simple to install and a good platform for either evaluating PHP + MYSQL applications or operating the same for up to a few hundred users.

Visit http://www.wampserver.com
Or http://www.wampserver.com/en/ for the English version
First it is important to note that most open source PHP + MySQL applications will not run correctly on the latest versions of PHP and MySQL. For this reason instead of the downloading the latest version of WAMP server click on “downloads” from the left menu and then click on “older versions at sourceforge” This will take you to
https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=116092
scroll down and select “WAMP5 1.4.3″. Download the WAMP5_1.4.3.exe file and install it on your computer with default options.

Once installed and started a new icon will appear in the icon tray near the date/time on your task bar. Left click on this icon to activate it’s menu which allows you to restart or edit the configuration files.

Changing the web server port if necessary.

One common reason for wanting to edit configuration file is in case you already have a web server running on the same computer. In this case you would need to change the port address used by apache to something other than 80. In this case 8080 would probably be a good alternative choice.

——-Changing the web server port address Begin———–

Click on the WAMP server icon and from the menu under “config files” select “httpd.conf”. A long text file will open up in notepad. In this file scroll down to the line that reads “Port 80″ and change this to read “Port 8080″, Save the file and close notepad. Once again click on the wamp server icon and select restart all services. One more change needs to be made before we are done. In Windows Explorer find the location where WAMP server was installed which is by Default “C:Wamp”. Next goto the subfolder named “www”. Inside here you will see another subfolder named “phpmyadmin”. We are looking for a file named “config.inc.php”. In a default installation this file will be at “C:Wampwwwphpmyadminconfig.inc.php”. Open this file in wordpad and find the line that reads
$cfg['PmaAbsoluteUri'] = ‘localhost/phpmyadmin/’;
Change this line to read:
$cfg['PmaAbsoluteUri'] = ‘localhost:8080/phpmyadmin/’;

——-Changing the web server port address End———–

Now open a web browser and access http://localhost . Or if you changed the port address to 8080 then goto http://localhost:8080/ You should be greeted by the WAMP welcome page. For each application that you wish to install create a new folder inside the “www” subfolder of where WAMP was installed. Lets assume that WAMP was installed at “C:Wamp”.

Let say for example you wanted to install Mambo (www.mamboserver.com)
1) You would download the .zip or .tar.gz or .tar.bz2 file and uncompress it using winzip or winrar into “c:Wampwwwmambo”.
2) You would access the wamp welcome page http://localhost/ or http://localhost:8080/ and access phpmyadmin. In here you would create a new database for mambo.
3) You would then access the wamp welcome page http://localhost/ or http://localhost:8080/ and from the list at the bottom of the page you would click on Mambo
4) You would then be greeted by the mambo installer which is a simple 5 step process. (the default username for MySQL is root and the password is blank as in an empty string)

Let say for example you wanted to install oscommerce
You would download the .zip or .tar.gz or .tar.bz2 file and uncompress it using winzip or winrar into “c:Wampwwwoscommerce”.
5) You would access the wamp welcome page http://localhost/ or http://localhost:8080/ and access phpmyadmin. In here you would create a new database for oscommerce.
6) You would then access the wamp welcome page http://localhost/ or http://localhost:8080/ and from the list at the bottom of the page you would click on Mambo
7) You would then be greeted by the oscommerce installer which is a simple process. (the default username for MySQL is root and the password is blank as in an empty string)

And so on and so forth.

Any PHP + MySQL web application which does not provide an automated installer is most likely not a very mature application.

Good luck

How I Joined the Outsourcing Revolution

Bloged in Software Stuff by Admin Tuesday March 10, 2009 at about 5:01 am

Mention “outsourcing” to a programmer and you may as well be uttering profanity. The word suggests all the evils that have befallen the Information Technology sector since the Internet bubble burst a few years ago. We’ve been endlessly regaled with tragic tales of American companies who have closed up shop for many of their I.T. positions, only to “offshore” those same jobs to programmers overseas working for less pay than their American counterparts. A brain drain is taking place in the once highly secure computer programming profession.

Rather than cursing the darkness, however, I found myself recently lighting a candle (or making the problem worse, depending on your perspective). You see, just over six months ago, I joined the outsourcing revolution. I am therefore writing this article partly as a confession, my own personal “mea culpa” of complicity.

No, I haven’t put myself up on the auction block to work for Indian rupees.

What I did was stumble upon several “reverse auction” web sites for outsourcing talent. If you haven’t heard of them, they go by the name of Elance.com (the largest site to date) or Guru.com. Both of these sites give companies an opportunity to outsource their projects to freelance workers like programmers, graphic artists and writers. Freelancers from all over the world compete for open bid requests, offering to do these contract jobs for a fixed price.

I happened upon a site called Rentacoder. Unlike the two sites mentioned above, Rentacoder didn’t require a subscription fee. Their take was a straightforward commission out of each project cost. Within minutes I posted my resume and profile. Then I had a choice to make. Which projects to bid on? In addition to programming projects, they also listed writing jobs as well. I decided to bid on some of the writing jobs first, just to see how it went, and because I had always wanted to do some freelance writing on the side.

Within my first week, I won a bid to write a document on Policies and Procedures. I completed that assignment, got paid, and then won another bida series of articles on stock market investing. Very soon I was addicted. I kept doing more writing…a technical white paper…web site content…economics articles…sales letters…a chapter in a novel…on and on. My payments were electronically transferred to my bank account, in New Economy style.

This addiction has grown into a decent part-time income for the past six months. I’ve worked for clients as far away as Australia and Turkey, in addition to clients in the East and West coasts in the United States. I became fixated with how easy it was to do business this way over the Internet, where the whole world became my market. Then I got hold of a book called Free Agent Nation, by a fellow named Daniel Pink. It was about how “teleworkers” such as myself are transforming America by doing business this new-fangled way, working for “gigs” instead of permanent commitments to one employer. I was part of another Big Thing.

Don’t misunderstand, I haven’t quit my day job just yet.

Am I getting rich?

Hardly. I make a few hundred extra dollars a month, and yes, I do get competition from workers in India. But now I am competing with them. The winning bid, in this case, doesn’t always go to the lowest bidder. Writers from America have an edge in this arena. Some buyers of writing services prefer native English speakers.

As I said, however, there are programming jobs posted on most of these sites too. Can programmers from the United States make a living strictly off these sites? Probably not. But programmers who choose to freelance can use these sites to supplement their income while contracting through normal staffing channels. They might make some meaningful connections in the process.

So there it is. I got it off my chest.

“My name is Nader Ghali, and I joined the outsourcing revolution.”

I feel much better. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go make some more bids.

Data Compression For All

Bloged in Software Stuff by Admin Thursday February 19, 2009 at about 10:04 am

Anyone who has seen the movie’ Honey I shrunk the kids’ can imagine how useful compression can be. Compression, which has become anonymous with Zip files work
off the same idea only with a (add your joke here)’slightly’ different technology.
You will find a lot of data compression programs in use today and some are easier and have better features than others, so in this article I will talk about compression in general, but may through in a couple of examples for comparison.

The first thing you need to know is that there can be more than one compressed file; you can have an archive (a multiple of files). The main benefit of this is that the user can:

*Save valuable disk space

*Can send and receive files on the internet quicker

*Speeds up your processor

*Depending on the file compression program can reduce files as much as 90%

The user should also be aware that files can only be opened with the original compression program that compressed it. Think of this as a form of protection, if you will since this is like an encrypted file or archive. Adding a password is another way to insure files are safe from prying eyes and some compression programs let you do this at any level of compression or decompression with the associated commands (update, move, feshien, add). Only individual files can be password protected not whole archives.

Ever since the first personal computers (PC’s) came about people found how easy it is to load up there drives with programs and downloads that eat up much of there memory. That’s why developers created data compression programs in the first place, to free up hard drive space and increase processor speed.

There are a lot of data compression programs and they are not exactly alike because they use different data compression algorithms. One popular program, for example looks for repeating words or phrases and assigns them there own character or number value.

A lot of users don’t fully understand the more advanced features of their data compression programs so they are not really getting there full value. Syntax command lines are a good example of this confusion. There are four basic commands in syntax (the shape of a command line);

*Command: The task to be preformed like add, delete or update.

*Archive: the name of the archive.

*Switch or Option: lets user specify a file option like adding file directories for compression.

*File: name of file(s) to be processed.

A user can compress files four basic ways:

*Add files to archive – old files with same name are overwritten.

*Move files to archive – upon compression old files are deleted.

*Update files – makes sure you have the most recent file version.

*Freshen files – almost like update, seeks out the last modified file and adds it to archive.

The above commands have there basic functions but can do other things. Ex. the update & add commands can create and compress files and the Freshen command can create a new archive.

There are only a couple of data compression programs out there that give the user more than one compression method – PKZIP AND ARJ.

PKZIP has what they call an imploding method and a shrinking method; without going into great detail imploding uses less memory (90k), and is very through. This is the default setting. Shrinking is fast but uses a bit more memory (128k), works great for smaller files.

ARJ gives the user more options for data compression. It uses multiple settings (m1 to m4),
This is a tradeoff of prosessing speed versus packing dentisy. There are 2 more options available here but test runs show no significant change in time or compression.
Even with experienced compression users, extracting compressed files with a newer version of a data compression program may prove difficult, so programmers created self extracting files (SFX) to enable beginners to easily use compressed files. This small program may be part of the original program or added after as a separate program.

I realize some of this may sound confusing and for that I apologize, and after all, people will compresses data using only the basic functions and be happy and content because it suits there present needs. In conclusion you can tell there are many options available when using any data compression program and it is well worth the time (got time on the week end?) and effort to learn some of the advanced features if you want to save some serious space on your hard drive.

Find Out How CRM Software System Works

Bloged in Software Stuff by Admin Friday January 23, 2009 at about 5:47 am

If your business is having trouble getting over the proverbial hump, a quality CRM software system may be the key to reaching that next level. CRM stands for Customer Relationship Management, and this type of software can be an effective way to learn more about your customer base while improving the bottom line. In this article, we’ll discuss this unique business tool, and find out how CRM software system works to improve both relationships and profits.

The basic idea behind an effective CRM strategy is to learn more about the customers you currently have so that you are better able to serve them. While this sounds simple enough, the fact of the matter is that often times businesses are unaware of this information, or worse yet do not think it is important. This is a crucial error that may be costing your business hundreds of thousands of dollars every year. A quality CRM software system works to give you insight into what makes your client base tick; so that you will be able to provide them with the options that they are really looking for. How does a CRM software system work to gain such information? Let’s take a closer look.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could implement a CRM software system and see the results just roll in? Unfortunately, that is not how it works. Rather, a successful CRM system hinges on your ability to collect and gain insight into your customers through a wide variety of methods. Through marketing campaigns, phone surveys, web site traffic, and mailings, you can start to get a clearer picture as to the preferences of your customers. You can then input this data into a CRM software system, which will analyze your findings for certain patterns. The next step involves employees of your company sifting through these findings to gain better insight into what strategies to focus on next. Proper employee training is just one of the keys to a successful CRM software system. Let’s now turn our attention towards a couple more keys.

To take advantage of the benefits offered by a CRM software system, you must first have a clear understanding of your customer base. For instance, a bank will need a different strategy than say a hardware store. With different clients expecting different types of service, every business has a responsibility to identify the needs of their customer base, and then work a plan based around these needs. Secondly, it is vital that you collect as much information and insight as you can. This will increase the chances for your CRM software system to come up with an innovative and successful business model, which should hopefully increase your profit margin. Lastly, it is important that all of your employees have the proper training and belief in the capabilities offered by a CRM software system. This will help to ensure that everything is being done towards the common goal of improving customer service.

We hope that this article gives you the information needed to find out how CRM software system works. If used properly, a CRM software system can be a great asset to any company. It can stabilize current relationships while helping to build new ones. If you would like to improve your business in a multitude of ways, why not consider a CRM software system?

Facility Maintenance Management Software

Bloged in Software Stuff by Admin Friday January 23, 2009 at about 4:37 am

Facilities form the non-core services of a corporation or any organization. Non-core services can include managing administration function, property management, and managing contract services such as cleaning and security. A major portion of the assets of an organization is in the form of infrastructure, like buildings and equipment. Hence, the maintenance of physical assets is a major function of facilities management.

The role of facilities management is to help businesses concentrate in their core competent areas. Facilities management takes on the role of providing routine, non-value-added services which are essential and important for the effective running of an organization.

Facilities management in its widest sense can be applied to any industries. The industries range from public services such as schools, universities and parks, to private services such as manufacturing. Anything that can be outsourced to a third party can be termed as facilities.

Since most of functions of facilities are routine, the role and capacity of IT is precisely suited for that function. IT provides end-to-end solutions for an enterprise. ERP and EAM systems take on the role of MRP systems to streamline operations and help reduce costs.

Physical assets such as buildings, equipment and IT installations require regular maintenance; therefore, the role of IT in providing maintenance solutions is a major part of the portfolio of ERP providers. Maintenance is a major function of facilities. According to a study, properly planned and maintained services can lead to a 20 percent reduction in the operating cost of a firm.

The level and scope of functionality varies in the maintenance management system, according to the type of industries and physical assets. Therefore, except for standard functions like maintenance audits and down-time calculators, most of the software functionalities should be customized.

These are many software vendors available, each of whom has an internet presence. The futuristic vision of maintenance management systems is already implemented by some vendors who provide on-demand remote maintenance services, thereby reducing the costs of installing of maintenance systems further.

Maintenance Management Software provides detailed information on Equipment Maintenance Management Software, Facility Maintenance Management Software, Fleet Maintenance Management Software, Foundation Maintenance Management Software and more. Spice Up Your Web Site with JavaScript

Bloged in Software Stuff by Admin Wednesday October 15, 2008 at about 12:57 am

JavaScript is a scripting language designed for use within a web page and/or on a web server. It is used to create special effects within a web page. Elements such as links, images and forms can be manipulated using this powerful technology.

Unlike CGI scripts, JavaScript can be placed directly into your HTML code. It can also reside on your server and be called from a small code within your web page.

This powerful scripting language can be used to create special effects on your web page such as link effects, mouseovers, image roll overs, navigational systems and much more.

Here are a few great scripts to get you started:

Navigation Bar

This script is actually a combination of JavaScript and HTML better known as DHTML. It will enable you to have a mouseover navigational menu at the top of your web page. When you place your mouse over the main menu, a drop down menu will appear. As you move your mouse over the drop down menu, each selection is highlighted. This navigation menu is very similar to the menu used at Microsoft.com.

Dynamic Splash Screen

If you’ve ever wanted to set up a splash screen for your web page, Dynamic Splash Screen will do just that. Splash pages can be used to tell your visitors a little bit about your site or whatever you’d like. The great thing about this script is that it is constructed using a single page. Once the splash messages have been completed, the script will navigate to the URL of your choice. It also includes a link on the splash page that says, “Skip Intro.” Nice effect.
