You probably didn’t know it, but one of the best times to lose weight is while you sleep. That’s because the human body is designed by nature to repair itself during the hours we are sleeping.

Our bodies use sleep to repair and strengthen our muscles, joints and other parts that get tired and damaged through use and exertion during waking hours.

This restorative process uses energy to rebuild lean muscle mass and to help rebuild other kinds of body tissue. That is worth repeating — this rebuilding process uses energy — and if the rebuilding process is running smoothly and efficiently, that energy comes from places in our body where energy is stored — from fat.

In other words, the body rebuilds tissue, organs, bone, and lean muscle by burning fat.

Several things about this process are worth noting. They have an important bearing on how efficiently it works.

**Collagen is very important to the body repair process

Collagen is the most common protein found in our bodies. It is the main component of our skin, nails, bones, cartilage, and connective tissue and is found in all of the body organs. Cartilage is the cushion and shock absorber between joints, and the reason we stay flexible and mobile. Healthy cartilage is constantly being regenerated by the body naturally and this process contributes to keeping us youthful and flexible.

As we age, our bodies lose the ability to produce collagen at sufficient levels needed to support the deep restorative sleep processes that our bodies are designed to perform. This can be a major contributor that leads to a premature aged appearance and can definitely affect our flexibility and mobility. It stands to reason that a collagen supplement combined with other natural ingredients can have a dramatic effect in better supporting the deep restorative sleep process. This in turn can allow the body to experience more energy, build more lean muscle, and burn more fat.

**Amino acids enhance the regeneration process

The rebuilding process is also influenced by the efficiency of the amino acids normally used for this purpose. As part of the rebuilding process, amino acids help maintain lean muscle mass and allow the body to more readily consume fat for energy. This contributes to weight loss.

Again, as we age, our body’s production of efficient amino acids is reduced. A supplement such as L-Carnitine is a special amino acid that enhances the body’s normal function and helps your body convert excess fat into readily available fuel. During deep sleep, these special amino acids work like a natural “turbo charger” to help your body repair, preserve and build lean muscle while burning stored fat to supply the needed energy.

**Not eating before sleeping is important

Since the body uses deep sleep for the restoration process, it is important when using a collagen supplement not to eat three hours before going asleep. This is because we don’t want nutrient competitiion between undigested food and the collagen supplement special nutrient formula itself. If the body has to concern itself with digestion it will not absorb the collagen formula properly. Therefore your body will not be performing its natural restorative process while you sleep, but rather will be concerned with undigested foods and will actually be storing fat from the continuing digestive process rather than burning fat as the energy for the deep sleep restorative process.

This tends to put us into a “diet circle of frustration”. The less time your body spends in deep restful sleep (without competing digestion), the less time it has to restore its natural health, and the less fat that is burned in support of this natural rebuilding process. Now we understand the key connection between deep restorative sleep and weight loss many times goes hand in hand with our overall health.

Reducing or eliminating the intake of food three hours before bedtime allows the body to use its natural fat reserves for metabolic fuel during the deep restorative sleep cycle.

**Collagen weight loss program build on this process

A natural collagen product such as Lose and Snooze enables this natural process to once again help people lose weight. Lose and Snooze consists of a blend of Collagen, L-Carnitine and Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera). The Collagen contributes to a more youthful appearance, greater flexibility, and all round mobility and strength.

In addition to all of this, most importantly, Collagen allows the deep sleep necessary to enable your body’s natural metabolic functions to occur, like when we were children. L-Carnitine promotes the burning of fat in support of the natural rebuilding, restorative process that occurs during deep sleep. The Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) contains numerous nutrients and amino acids that help create a healthy environment in support of your body’s own ability to create its own collagen, in addition to the remarkable Lose and Snooze formula itself.

Thousands of satisfied users of the collagen weight loss program have reported that using the liquid formula in combination with an empty stomach before bedtime, has been beneficial to their health and has helped them naturally lose weight.

And because the collagen weight loss program only helps lose excess fat (while rebuilding muscle), it can be used by anybody — not just people wanting to lose weight. It has also been beneficial to folks who want to enjoy better sleep, build lean muscle, improve their appearance and to reshape their body while maintaining their proper healthy weight.

There’s a distinct difference between running outside and
on treadmill, and they both have their positives and
negatives. The top notch benefit of using a treadmill is
that you will never have to contend with the elements of
being outside, which depending on where you are in world
can get bitterly cold or sizzling hot.

There’s a cushioned surface on the treadmill that will
lessen the impact of running, which can reduce the number
of shin splints that occur from outside running. There are
motivational factors that make a treadmill a very appealing
form of exercising where you have the power to manually
adjust your terrain with different speeds, all controlled
by you and your fingertips.

Depending on where you are, it may be extremely difficult
to find such terrain differences to ensure that you have a
diverse running path, something that a treadmill can offer
at all times.

The downside to the treadmill if there is one is that it
confines you the size of the treadmill, which in turn will
limit the amount of capable movement you can perform.

Running, jogging, or walking outside can maximize the
amount your muscles are impacted through the movement in
your body caused by the terrain and this has been known to
cause more calories to be burned as a result. So the
ability to limit your body’s natural running movement is
the only drawback to using a treadmill.

If you do use a treadmill, it is highly advised not to use
it more than 30-45 minutes per session as your body will be
maxed out at that point.

If you do not feel that your body is getting enough out of
it, then you are encouraged to begin some type of interval
training on the machine, which will vary your length and
terrain as you see fit. It is also recommended that you
should use some form of weight training with cardio
exercises to reap total benefit.

If you are looking to burn some calories a treadmill, or
any cardio machine for that matter, will give you the
maximize desired benefits. It is not about how long you
use this machine but the variance of your workout that will
determine the effectiveness of what you are doing that will
show you how great the treadmill is.

Find out why treadmills can burn fat more efficiently than
almost any other exercise. See reviews and useful
information. http://www.treadmills-easy.com/

treadmills in a series of articles.

Losing weight can be an insidious challenge. The concept certainly sounds straightforward: burn more energy than calories consumed and over time you’ll lose weight. But this simple formula does not consider the “human” factors at work. For example, how do you deal with that very human factor called hunger? It’s really tough to consume fewer calories if you’re hungry (or think you’re hungry – a difference without a distinction when it comes to the drive to eat more). In my case, I feel hungrier when I’ve been exercising heavily so I sabotage the magic formula because even though I’m burning more energy by exercising, that innate human force called hunger is searching out more calories to consume and oftentimes the pendulum swings back in favor of consuming more calories than burned. This is not to say that we should cave in to hunger; if we’re trying to lose weight then chances are we’re probably eating too much and thus hunger alone is not a good indicator of how many calories to consume. So, the challenge is to somehow control and manage our hunger so that we are successful at cutting our consumed calories. The attached article by Eric Sabo of the Denver Post suggests adopting new habits that will help manage hunger so that you become more comfortable consuming less food.

Anyone who has ever been in a gym before is familiar with the gleaming banks of shiny exercise machines. Coming in all shapes and sizes, they are usually cause for the newcomer to the gym to pause and ask, “What IS all of that stuff?”

Well, according to the price that the gym paid for any one piece of that equipment, I certainly hope that it not only stimulates your muscles, but also cooks your breakfast, washes your car, and brings the kids home from soccer practice! Now the question becomes whether or not those machines were worth the price, or if you’d be better off doing a home aerobics video with a can of soup in each hand….

Personally, I would advise you to get the low-sodium version of the soup, serve it up alongside a tomato sandwich, and then go buy yourself some free weights. Yes, that is just my opinion, but it does come with some scientific reasoning behind it.

Natural movement vs. Controlled movement

One of the things that you need to remember is that when you are exercising, you are training for LIFE. You may spend an hour a day at the gym, but that still leaves 23 other hours for your muscles to function without the aid of that fancy equipment.

Whenever you do any given exercise, the movement of your body during that exercise is called the Range of Motion. The greater and more difficult the Range of Motion, the more effective the exercise is, because your body has to work harder to perform that movement.

Let’s take a classic dumbbell bicep curl for our case study. If you aren’t familiar with the movement, it is basically performed by standing up straight with your palms facing forward, and a pair of dumbbells held down at your sides. You concentrically contract your biceps (also known as flexing your elbow) to bring the dumbbells up to approximately shoulder level, and then repeat the movement for a prescribed number of repetitions.

Let’s take that same muscle movement and do it using a bicep curl machine. You sit down, brace your upper arms on a pad, grasp 2 handles that are in front of you, and do that same fancy elbow flexing movement to move the handles in an upward motion. Pretty easy stuff so far, right?

Now let’s examine the muscles that are used in this motion. Wait – I thought we were concentrically contracting the biceps? That is correct, and if you are using the bicep curl machine, that is pretty much ALL you are doing. For one, you are sitting down. You know, like you did all day at work, and then in your car on the way to the gym. Then, your upper arms are braced on a nice soft pad to keep your upper body stable while you pull the handles upwards. The machine has effectively limited the muscles used in this exercise to the biceps, as well as the muscles in your forearms and fingers as you grip the handles.

Let us now sidestep over to the weight room where the dumbbells are kept, and once again get in the start position for a standing bicep curl with the dumbbells. Notice the term “standing”. You know, like you DIDN’T do all day at work, and hopefully also did not do in your car on the way to the gym. So before we even start the exercise, we are using more muscles than we did on the machine – namely the leg muscles.

Now let’s pick up a 10 lb dumbbell in each hand. We’ve just added 20 lbs to our body weight. What is keeping us from losing our center of balance and falling clean over? The abdominal muscles and the muscles of the lower back and spine. Now we are using our legs, our abs, and our back. Flex those elbows and start to raise the dumbbells. Now our center of gravity has become a fluid state, and our legs, back, and abs all have to constantly compensate to maintain posture. Oh, and the biceps are also in on the action by this point, as are the forearms, the fingers, and the shoulder girdle.

We now have the dumbbells all the way up and it’s time to start lowering them again, via an eccentric contraction of the biceps (also know as extending the elbow). What muscle group controls the extension of the elbow? The triceps on the back of the arm.

Did you lose track yet? It’s okay if you did because you have illustrated the point:

Machine Bicep Curl: Uses the biceps, forearms, and fingers

Cost: Thousands of dollars

Standing Dumbbell Bicep Curl: Uses the biceps, forearms, fingers, legs, abs, back, triceps, and shoulders.

Cost: $40 for a good set of dumbbells that can be used for dozens of other exercises

In a nutshell, free weight exercises simply USE MORE MUSCLES than machines do, which make them more effective. Does that mean that the machines are a complete waste? Absolutely not! In some circumstances it is BETTER to stabilize the muscles being used in any given movement. However, those circumstances are the exception, rather than the rule.

So what do you do? Change up your routine, and incorporate free weights as well as machine exercises. However, keep the machine work to a minimum – say 20% of your total time spent working with weights. Spend the other 80% developing your stabilizer muscles, your sense of balance and coordination, and if nothing else – just standing up!

After all, you can go home and sit down on the couch to enjoy your post-workout snack. The bicep machine already brought the kids home from soccer practice, remember?

Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is characterized by a red itchy rash that is scaly and is oozing in some cases. The condition can appear on the arms and legs, cheeks, forehead, and in body parts such as knees and elbows where there are creases. In some cases, skin will have a leathery feel and even crack or blister. Some people also experience a thickening of the skin, red patches and even a slight color change when they have eczema.

1. Skin Conditions

This refers to the skin’s inflammation, while atopic means an allergic, and usually genetic or inherited, tendency. The condition is common for infants, although eczema is typically outgrown. The child’s condition could be chronic, or recur with regularity, if the problem persists beyond the second birthday, when eczema usually disappears. Eczema can worsen during winter, when dryness pervades the house, and summer, when temperatures could rise to extremes.

2. Treatment

The rashes are easy to eliminate, although they return sometimes even with proper treatment. To prevent eczema, bubble baths, exposure to extreme heat, strong soaps and other triggers must be avoided. In cases where these triggers are sometimes hard to avoid or identify, moisturizers may be the most important weapon one can use to prevent any flare-up of the condition. Since atopic dermatitis can accompany dry skin, individuals with this skin type will benefit from taking a daily bath – of about 5-10 minutes – with lukewarm water and using only a mild soap with moisturizing properties. This helps locks the moisture into the skin, limiting the likelihood of eczema development. Some people benefit from having topical medications as the first layer of treatment, with moisturizers or lubricants applied on top as the second layer, following a bath. This two-pronged approach should be enough to maintain healthy and hydrated skin.

3. Ointments & Creams

Greasy ointments are one of several moisturizers available in the market. Aquaphor and Vaseline are probably the more popular choices, although consumers should also consider other brands and similar products to determine which one works best for their skin. For more extreme eczema break-outs, individuals may need to turn to topical steroids and Protopic and other non-steroidal treatments. Hydrocortisone creams are among the very mild over-the-counter topical steroids one can use, even on facial eczema. Drug stores will already ask for a prescription for Dermatop, 0.1% Triamcinolone, Cutivate, Elocon and other more potent topicals. These stronger products are generally not advisable for children, as they could have adverse effects.

4. Medications

Protopic, Elidel and other non-steroidal medications, or immunodulators, are preferred for children with eczema. These milder topicals can be used twice daily, and even on the face and other more sensitive areas. However, steroid-free medications take a longer time before producing results compared to topical steroids. Some doctors recommend antihistamines as part of eczema treatment. Atarax, Benadryl and other antihistamines with a sedative effect are particularly effective in cases when itching is already hampering sleep. Other solutions that can also help are cold compresses, wet dressings, ultraviolet light therapy, oral steroids and cylcosporin and other immunosuppressive drugs.

5. Other Factors

Some individuals may find that the condition is common within the family. One who is genetically disposed to having sensitive skin could easily trigger bouts of eczema due to an allergy, stress or other specific environmental factor. Asthma, allergic rhinitis and other similar disorders tend to accompany eczema in these individuals. When this happens, the allergen or source of the allergy must be identified first and properly addressed. These sources could include shrimp and other seafood, strawberries, nuts, cow’s milk, eggs and other types of food. Pollen, dust mites and other airborne agents are also possible triggers. Eczema can also be driven by irritation to specific substances such as detergents, products containing chlorine, earrings and jewelry containing silver or nickel, woolen fabrics, synthetic materials, latex rubber, and formaldehyde and similar chemicals.

6. Treatment Tips

Eczema may not require continuous treatment, as most people generally outgrow the condition as they become older. However, antibiotics may have to be used when infections set in and hamper treatment of the flares. A dermatologist, allergologist or other specialist should be consulted after reasonable time and treatment fails to eliminate eczema or improve skin condition. Consultation should be immediate particularly if the affected individual develops fluid- or pus-filled blisters, which are symptomatic of eczema herpeticum – a rare complication attributed to the herpes simplex virus.

Metabolism basically means the count of calories you burn per day. Repeatedly you have might read from the articles about accelerating the rate of metabolism. The most common reasons are consuming highly nutritious food and performing workouts. If your metabolism rate is slower, it shows you are burning less of calories. In order to increase the rate, you must follow the below tips:

1) Do not observe fasting because you burn too many calories at once, which is really harmful to your body. In this process your muscles turn weak and you face dehydration rather than minimizing the fat content.

2) Dine about 6-8 times a day by consuming nutritious items such as fruits and vegetables.

3) A heavy breakfast is a key factor in increasing the rate of metabolism. Since you are awake for the whole day, the rate of metabolism is fast.

4) There are many kinds of healthy fats available such as nuts, fish, olive oil, and flax oil. They can be the substitutes for processed carbs.

5) Consume less of sugar so that the insulin production is regulated and you will thus burn calories easily.

6) Eat about 1 gm of protein per pound because the excessive fat content will be drained away.

7) Remember that alcohol is uprightly harmful for the people planning to loose weight. It prevents fat burning and contains almost 100s of calories.

Green tea and water are the best forms of beverages that do not affect the metabolism process. So use them instead of tea, coffee and alcohol.

9) Night shifts are normally not advisable, but if you think they are unavoidable then follow the above-mentioned tips carefully.

10) In order to make your metabolism process effective use the Turbulence Training manual that provide you right instruction to perform workouts.

If your metabolism rate is slower, it shows you are burning less of calories. Remember the above points for a healthy life.

Vitamin A was given the first letter of the alphabet for a name because it was the first vitamin to be discovered. It was found that vitamin A has a large number of uses in the body including keeping eyes healthy, aiding cell growth and also helping boost the immune system. Nevertheless, vitamin A is not only absorbed directly but it is also created by the body by converting beta carotene into vitamin A.

Vitamin A itself is found in a number of foods such as eggs, milk, liver and meat. Beta carotene that the body can convert into vitamin A is found in many fruits and vegetables, especially the red, orange and green coloured ones. The most important point to remember that consuming too much pure vitamin A can be toxic. It is essential not to exceed the recommended daily allowance for vitamin A.

The actual recommended allowance of vitamin A varies depending on a person’s age, sex and other factors. While the actual amount of vitamin A consumed may be toxic if the recommended daily allowance is exceeded, there is a far higher limit to how much beta carotene can be consumed. Therefore it is advisable to concentrate on obtaining the greatest amount of beta carotene which the body can then convert to vitamin A, rather than consuming vast quantities of pure vitamin A rich foods.

Many people will remember being told that eating lots of carrots helps you to see in the dark and that is down to the vitamin A that is produced from the high levels of beta carotene that are found in the vegetables. Other foods which have high levels of beta carotene that can be converted to vitamin A include tomatoes and dark green leafy vegetables, such as spinach. Beta carotene is not only used to form vitamin A, but it is also a powerful antioxidant in itself.

None of the beta carotene that is absorbed is wasted as any excess after conversion to vitamin A has taken place is used to fight the harmful free radicals within the body. Vitamin A also helps fight infections and illnesses by helping tissues that line various parts of the body, including the eyes, mouth, nose, throat and lungs, to grow and also to repair them if they are damaged to prevent infection. Children also need plenty of vitamin A to help their bones and teeth to develop properly.

In the market for a treadmill? Finding that they are a little more expensive than you thought, at least to get the ones with the features you want? Used treadmills may well be what you need. Used treadmills are big business, and growing fast.

First, I hear you ask, why should I buy a treadmill at all, let alone a used treadmill?

Treadmills are the most popular of all the fitness equipment in use in the US today. The National Sporting Goods Association estimates that treadmill sales last year topped $750 million. That’s big business. It is estimated that around 8% to 9% of the population own a treadmill. You do the math, but to me that’s around 20 million people. That’s a lot of treadmills that have been bought, and a lot of treadmills which may soon become used treadmills for sale.

Why is exercising on a treadmill so popular? A couple of reasons. The first is that exercising on a treadmill is done indoors. No rain, hail or snow to contend with. No muggers. No-one to poke fun at your running shoes that aren’t quite the latest fashion, or that tummy that you are trying so hard to get rid of. Treadmills mean that you can do your exercise anonymously.

Single mum? Pregnant? No matter. Do your exercise while the kids watch tv. No need to find a baby sitter each day so you can go for a run. How about being able to cook the dinner while you do a little treadmill walking. It can all be combined.

And treadmills offer a whole world of workouts. Gone are the days when you just walked, or ran. Now you can select from any one of a host of different workouts. Simulate all sorts of outdoor conditions such as undulating hills, varying workout speeds and more. You can have an interactive workout by connecting to various programs on the internet which track your performance, devise training regimes for you, and more. Or even interact with a personal trainer from the comfort of your own home.

But that isn’t unique only to treadmills, there are other indoor exercisers, such as stationary bicycles. And it certainly is true that stationary bicycles are popular too. However treadmills offer the best workout for your buck.

But according to a study done by the Medical College of Wisconsin and the VA Medical Center in Milwaukee a treadmill burns more calories than a similar workout on a stair machine, a stationary bike or a rowing machine over the same time. Surprisingly it also burns more calories than a cross country skiing machine. As cross country skiing is often touted as the ideal workout this says heaps about a treadmill workout.

Convinced? Now it’s time to consider the next question, how much do treadmills cost? Unfortunately they aren’t cheap and, as with everything, you get what you pay for. Whilst you can buy a new treadmill for around $500, it will be the most basic one on the market, lacking most of the features of the best ones. And of course those are the features you want. And then you’re talking big bucks, thousands.

That’s where used treadmills come in. Used treadmills are readily available at a price that is much more likeable than the price of a new one. But, don’t you take a risk when you buy a used treadmill?

Ordinary used treadmills for sale, yes. You don’t know how they’ve been treated. But there is a better way than ordinary used treadmills. Enter re-manufactured treadmills, often called refurbished treadmills.

Re-manufactured or refurbished treadmills are used treadmills which are taken in by a treadmill manufacturer and reconditioned. A new motor, a new belt, a complete physical. These remanufactured treadmills are the perfect alternative to a used treadmill. They have been lovingly restored to an as new condition, but sell at around half the price of the same model new.

And they come with a guarantee, or should. If they don’t then don’t buy them.

So if you are in the market for used treadmills because new ones are too pricey for you, then consider re-manufactured or refurbished treadmills. You may be able to find used treadmills for sale at better prices, however you have no idea what you are buying. Buy a used treadmill that has had too hard a life and you may find yourself paying for a new motor in a months time, and that cheap used treadmill isn’t looking so cheap any more.

So if you are looking for used treadmills, do yourself a favour. Look at re-manufactured treadmills first. You’ll be glad you did!

Although I wrote this in Paris, I’m posting this from the USA as I lost my high speed connection just before leaving Paris.

As I depart Paris, a few observations:

First on diet and fitness:

A. The Parisians are definitely trimmer and fitter than Americans. I would attribute this to:

1.	A significantly less sedentary lifestyle. Parisians are out walking all of the time and even when they take the metro, long walks to and from the station are involved. Cars are generally not used for commuting. Bicycles are still a popular means of getting to work and running errands in the city, unlike the US where bicycles are only used for recreation. 2.	Portion control. Paris restaurants are world renowned for their culinary excellence and rightfully so. But the portions served are significantly smaller here in Paris than they are in the US. Parisians eat a mixed diet and DO NOT avoid fat and refined carbs. However, they eat significantly less at one setting than their American counterparts. Many studies have shown that the key factor in how much food one imbibes is how much food is placed in front of them. Americans out eat Parisians, in part, because American restaurants serve vastly larger portions (and this is not good.) 3.	Parisians care a lot about how they look both in a fitness and a fashion sense. Americans are much more willing to accept the “overweight” look.

B.	A law to limit smoking in public spaces in France was just abandoned in part due to opposition from the tobacco groups. Paris has not ended its love affair with smoking and this is a major negative health wise for the French and an inconvenience for visitors–public places and restaurants can be a smoky environment. It’s somewhat amazing that tobacco lobby groups still have influence here in France–compare that to their virtual pariah status in the US legislative process.

And a final non health and fitness observation.

As in past trips, the Parisians that I met casually, in business, and socially were generally polite and helpful. It’s a different culture obviously and as a result of the cultural differences, misunderstandings sometimes arise. But I think that Americans are very welcome in France and will really enjoy their experiences here.
